It’s Pronounced Cooch Teighan Couch
Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Teighan moved to Nanaimo at the age of 21 with dreams of becoming a professional jazz vocalist. Having only started singing at the age of 18, she had very little experience with jazz when she was first accepted into Vancouver Island University’s jazz studies program. During her time at VIU, she was a three time recipient for the Burgundy Scholarship Fund for her hard work and dedication to her vocal studies. She is now an accomplished graduate and a fierce musician with a Bachelor of Music with a focus in jazz studies.
In June 2024 Teighan made her debut at Upstairs Jazz Club in Montreal with the Ryan Bennett Trio. They performed a collection of jazz standard repertoire and original compositions. The featured video below is Teighan singing Jazzmeia Horn’s arrangement of “I Remember You”.
Teighan continues to expand on her creativity and write original material. In November 2024 Teighan performed her most recently composed original song “Goodbye, Love” at a new arts venue in Nanaimo; the Attic. The band features Nicholas Peck on keys and Kosma Busheikin on upright bass.
Her music is largely focused on the swing and bebop eras of jazz with inspirations such as Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson and Ahmad Jamal. Her performances are a collection of original compositions and her own arrangements of her favourite standard repertoire. Her album “It’s Pronounced Cooch” is set to be released in June 2025 and features a rhythm section of seasoned professionals of the industry; Nicholas Peck on piano, Ken Lister on bass and Hans Verhoeven on drums. The album also features two incredibly talented soloists with Cayleigh Borsboom on saxophone and Andrew Janusson on guitar. Janusson is the featured soloist on the debut single “You Just Can’t Hide”.
Her music also extends into other genres such as neo-soul and hip-hop. Her original song “Something’s Gotta Change” recorded at Sound Heritage is an intimate narrative on her past struggles with addiction. The song takes inspiration from one of Teighan’s first introductions to jazz vocals; Amy Winehouse.

Since graduating in 2023, she has been building her performance resume, playing shows from Vancouver to Montreal. She has lead two performances in the Nanaimo Jazz Fest, opened for Ken Lavigne at the Nanaimo Big Band Festival and plays regularly for the Georgia Straight Jazz Society. Her debut single and original composition "You Just Can't Hide" was released this past spring and is available on all streaming platforms. The single is the first release from her upcoming debut album "It's Pronounced Cooch" which is projected to be released in the spring of 2025. Teighan has made quite a name for herself in the Nanaimo music scene, regularly selling out shows at local venues such as the Vault Cafe and the Black Rabbit.

Malcom Holt, president of the Georgia Straight Jazz Society, commented on Teighan's performances in the Comox Valley Record praising her to likes of the incredible Ella Fitzgerald: “If you love Ella’s style, you’re going to be amazed at Teighan Couch’s performance. She not only sings in Ella’s style but she can scat like her too.” (April 1st 2024)
